Wicked Sheela-Na-Gig

*Sheela na gigs are figurative carvings of naked women displaying an exaggerated vulva and are said to ward off evil. They are found on churches, castles, and other buildings, particularly in Ireland and Great Britain. (Wikipedia)

 

All gather around me,

and I shall tell ye a story

of a creature with such wicked skills!

She even causes demons to tremble.

On the highest pinnacle of the Lord’s House,

she clings to the walls with sharp claws.

Chiseled from stone, her eyes pierce

like arrows into the murky heart of evil.

No devil would dare enter the church doors.

For Sheela watches and terrorizes –

the shadows skitter into dim corners.

Iniquitous critters quake at her sight

and in haste, back to Hades, they slither.

    Interesting how women and goddesses were portrayed until patriarchal rule took over, eh?
