By counting sheep,
I
try
to
sleep.
Impossible
since thoughts of you
dance in my head
with musical notes
I can touch
and
gather
in
the
palm
of
my
hands.
I shine a light
to study them.
What I see
are your eyes –
full of wonder
you can’t hide.
Ah, you’re dreaming
of
me,
you
say.
Stick to sheep,
silly
girl!
For if you think of me,
I’ll keep you up
very late,
and all your sheep
(gasp)
will
escape.

*Counting sheep is a mental exercise used in some cultures as a means of putting oneself to sleep. In most depictions of the activity, the practitioner envisions an endless series of identical white sheep jumping over a fence, while counting them as they do so. (Wikipedia)
(Gasp) is right! I love this.

Thanks, B. I’m sure the sheep love you, too. Bah, baby! 🐑 🐑 🐑

Lovely words, bless those sheep and their lambs..counting sheep can work, but I think , counting works even without the sheep, cause their antics might make you laugh or cry and wake you up again. Hmm, just my feelings

Sheep’s antics make you laugh or cry? Hmm, that only happens to me when I count men! 😜

You should record yourself counting imaginative sheep! I like the way you formatted your poem. The photograph also complements your poem very well.

Lol. Thanks! The formatting went well with the rhythm of counting sheep, I thought — or at least it was the closest I could get to visually demonstrating that. I’m a very low tech sheep counter. I don’t have the cool special effects you have. 😊.
I’m glad you caught the numbers on the sheep! Gold star for you. ⭐️

The formatting went well and flowed evenly. It would be cool if you could format a poem to look like a particular object, but I’m not sure if that’s possible.

Thanks! I didn’t see your comment until now — sorry, Fly! We did concrete poems for Katydid, remember? There were poems that resembled trees and a mushroom in the ebook.

Beautiful and very cleverly written poem, Rose. I hope the numbers painted on the sheep’s flank will help while counting 😉

Ah, your photograph was whimsical and sweet, Inese. I had so much fun with your lovely capture and enjoyed how perfectly numbered two sheep were — that did help with counting them! ❤️ Thanks so much for allowing me to borrow your enchanting photograph.

Nice, Rose. Your words and their cadence just swept me along on a sensual tide. With my guy, I don’t mind when the sheep escape. 🙂

Thank you Cathy! Aw, your guy sounds very sweet. No sheep needed for you then. 😘

Luckily, no. When you have the right man sleeping beside you, sheep just crowd up the bed. 😀

I also used to count sheep when I was little. Now I rather get up and go out to smoke a cigarette.

Lol. Do you count donut smoke rings? If I smoked, I would. 😃

No, actually I don’t. But that would be an idea!

I like the thought of gathering musical notes in the palm of your hand…. Wonderful…

It takes some skill to collect musical notes in the palm of your hands. The b sharp can nick you if you aren’t careful. 😉

Ah yes… The skillful are able to sort through and only collect the flats! You can see by my scars that I’m not one of them!

Just watch out for the sheep who miss the jump over the fence. The sound might keep you awake lol. 🐏

Haha! That’s actually happened to me before, so now I pad the fence. 😀

Glad that counting sheep worked well for U. For me, not so much.
After counting sheep,
I slept and had a nightmare.
I was scared sheepless.

I bow to your ability to take off from so many interesting pix from so many sources, and to recite your poems. Recitations by me would sound better with the spkrs turned off.

Love the gasp at the end. Perhaps a hint that the speaker is a baa-baa-baad girl.

I can be a bit sheepish, but I’m never baa-aaad. 😉 Ha! Nice one!!

Numbers makes me sleepy. Well, most numbers.
Another great poem, and reading. Can I add this one to the Open Mic?

How do people picture the same sheep over and over? It never works for me!
There is something dark about this one. Not only the gasp at the end, which is a great touch, confirming the feeling of eeriness and subtle threat. Love it. ❥ Hearing your voice bring your poem to life is an added bonus.

Yes, there’s a tinge of shadow here, Merrie — thanks for picking that up. ❤
