I want this pain as it pours down on me.
I want this hurt that keeps badgering –
unrelenting and grasping.
This merciless spasm is a dagger through me –
forever pushing and prodding –
making me promise
to never get down on my knees.
I’ll clench my fists and keep fighting.
It knocks me hard and leaves me bruises –
if I should even lean towards defeat.
Don’t stop this perpetual pain –
this excruciating screw in my brain.
It’s a continuum of agony that I need.

There are different pains that are essential, I believe. Whatever drives us to become a better person, lover, writer, mother, friend, father, etc. is a wanted pain. Then, of course, there are other pains that can go to hell. π

Good one. We all must overcome or learn to deal with pain in our lives.

Have you ever read The Hellbound Heart? Your poem reminds me of that book — you should check it out. The book refers to the subtle relationship between pleasure and pain and how they can become united, or indistinguishable. Nice work!

Hmm. I’ve never been a Clive Barker fan, but I’m glad you were able to make a connection of sorts with my poem! Thank you. π

Physical pain is to be preferred to the pain in your heart and soul, imo.

I used to worry about that when my heart was intact a long time ago, but now no longer. π You’re right, though, physical pain doesn’t cut deep to your soul.

Yes! I thought about that before! I can visualize a screw struggling its way through the hard wood when I think of some people I know. They just want that pain! Amazing is the world of people – a source of inspiration for a poet.
