“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
― Neil Gaiman, Coraline

Through thorny forests and carmine streams,
she straddles her horse in dream-filled sleep.
Nightmares crawl from beneath rocks
when her celestial eyes droop shut.

Stars abound in the night skies –
oblivious of the terror the dark hides.
She’s not a princess nor a knight,
and she wears no armor to her fights.

The dragon looms and awaits her.
He’s forged from her childhood horrors.
As she approaches, he scorches her skin.
It’s a familiar pain that never ends.

She gnashes her teeth. Enough is enough!
It’s time she faced her fears; they must stop.
With a keen sword, she severs his head clean
and sighs gratefully. No more dragons in her dreams.
