There are strings attached to my soul.
They pull me one way and then the other –
like an endless tug of war.
Yanking reason from side to side,
I say things to hurt you –
that’s when I know you’re mine.

It reminded me of the relationship between spider and fly: strings attached to your soul, the notion that something is keeping ‘the fly’ there even though it might ultimately be bad for it. It’s cool that it can be read in so many different ways!

So if you get angry and say hurtful things but the other person stays anyway, you feel reassured that the person loves you. Is that how it works? I’m really bad at working out affairs of the heart like this. (My wife will vouch for me. I’m pretty useless.)

I’m sorry, darling. I forget that there are innocent souls who read my dark poetry and don’t understand their meaning. 😃 If someone you have no emotional connection with said that they didn’t care for your bag head, would it hurt more or less if your wife or a good friend told you the same thing?
Have you ever had a petty argument and said hurtful things to someone you cared for and saw the hurt in their eyes and knew (although you’ve always known) it hit home?

I think I know what you mean. Occasionally, I there have been arguments when I’ve said more than I should have and I’ve been looked up at with tearful eyes.
Of course, then I wish the earth would swallow me up. I hate that feeling. It has been a long time since I’ve felt it, though. It was more common early on with my wife.

Thank you. I don’t think I’ve ever made anybody swoon before. It makes me feel quite “George Clooney-esqe.” (I wonder if he’d suit a bag on his head. I’m not sure he could carry the look.)

Lol! Clooney would probably not take anything less than a Louis Vuitton bag, and that would not even come close to the classic ruggedness of your masterpiece. ♛

The only ones in life that should be on the receiving end of painful emotions are those worth emoting over. In reality, most of us spend countless time wasting our healthy emotions on those who bring no meaning or value to our lives. Your words are meaningful to me as is your friendship.
